BMTT Bali | 12–24 August 2026 | Bali
Every artist in Bali strives for taksu. The Balinese define it as the moment when the artist completely surrenders to the form of their craft and God appears. This energy has many names and is present in many cultures. Indians call it rasa, the Spanish call it duende, the Yoruba call it ase, in Japan it is hana (the blooming of the flower), and in America, they call it the ‘zone’ or the ‘it’ factor. Dr. Budi Miller will introduce you to the concepts of taksu integrating over two decades of research while training, living, and teaching with the Balinese. He brings his expertise combined with his intersection as a black queer neural diverse artist and Balinese Performing Arts Training (BPAT). Under the custodianship of the Balinese people—elders, master teachers and priests: with these mentors, Dr. Budi has designed an experience that interacts Western Actor training with the ancient and extremely contemporary knowledge of BPAT.
This workshop will be in collaboration and consultation with the master teachers of Bali. This 12-day theatre training workshop focuses on activating the ultimate performance energy of taksu in the body and composing spaces to activate and contain this tangible energy. Participants will work daily training in BPAT: kecak acapella choral chanting, Balinese Dance, Balinese Mask Performance, Balinese gamelan orchestra; Fitzmaurice Voicework; Maskwork and Budi Miller Taksu Training (BMTT). All activities and housing will occur at the GEOKS Arts Center in the village of Singapadu.
